Google X
X is a semi-secret research and development facility funded by Alphabet Inc., the corporation that oversees Google and its affiliate companies. The majority of projects at X are not public and can not be discussed beyond generalizations. Some examples of projects that have graduated from X to become their own public Alphabet companies include Waymo (self driving cars), Loon (weather balloon wifi networks), and Wing (delivery drones).
Everyday Robots
Hardware Engineering Intern
May 2018 - August 2018
During my time at X, I designed repeatable reliability experiments and test beds for cables, sensors, and subsystems for the Everyday Robotics Project. Some of my primary assignments included validating sensor performance testing the accuracy of output values, collecting and interpreting actuator backlash data, and performing teardowns and failure analysis on a system after lifetime cycling. I was lucky enough to work with almost every mechanical section of the robot including the base, arm, and gripper.
Although my main responsibilities were based in Hardware Engineering, I was encouraged to explore my software skills in my free time. One of the highlights of my internship was the day I spent teaching the robot to feed me cereal! I 3D printed a special adapter for the gripper that was capable of holding a spoon and used facial tracking technology to write my program.
